Howe High School has implemented a new program for the Spring, 2019 semester. Students have the opportunity to enroll in an Internship program and receive high school credit while learning about future career opportunities. Local businesses have partnered with Howe Public Schools by allowing students to come to their place of business five days a week for one to two hours each day to learn through hands-on experience about careers within our community. Presently, three students have enrolled in this program. Marlene Miller works at Benzer Pharmacy from 1:25 to 3:05 pm each day. Dr. Steve Helm, the Benzer Pharmacist, is thoroughly pleased with Marlene and her willingness to work. She has done everything asked of her and never complains. She observes a lot of the time, but spends some of the time finding expired medicines and cleaning (part the duties of owning your own business). Joseph Bacon works at Mark it Place from 10:10 to 11:50 am each day. Karen Mill, owner of Mark it Place, believes Joseph has a bright future in the area of Graphic Design/Computer Science. He catches on to things quickly and completes the task at hand. Joseph is learning to use CORELDRAW software. He designed his first key chain and was very excited about the finished product. Joseph learned Photoshop in the Howe Multimedia class and CORELDRAW is an advanced continuation of using the skills learned at Howe. Karen is quite pleased to have Joseph each day. Hope Lockhart works with Dr. Scott Parham at the Parham Chiropractic in Cameron, OK on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:25 am to 12:25 pm. She also works with Mary Parham at the Historic Downtown Poteau office on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:25 am to 12:25 pm. Hope has been learning the clerical side of the business. She will also have the opportunity to observe Chiropractic procedures. Hope has already toured Parker University in Dallas, TX in hopes of attending Chiropractic school after graduation. Mary and Scott are very pleased with Hope and are excited to have her as a part of their team. #HPSLions #OutsideTheLions

Howe School Resource Officer Jody Cooper and Vocational Agriculture Instructor James Marshall recently partnered on a project in which students in Mr. Marshall’s 2nd hour class (Introduction to Natural Resources and Environmental Science) participated in an elective pilot class focusing on Criminal Justice Strategy and the goal of how to increase campus safety and awareness. For the past two weeks, eight students analyzed campus safety concerns and chose a project addressing an identified area of concern. The students noticed shrubbery was partially blocking two lower elementary exterior door exits, and developed a plan to fix the problem. The students worked together to prune the overgrown shrubs, opening a safe pathway for both exterior emergency exits. The Criminal Justice Strategy pilot class received great reviews from the participants and will possibly be implemented as a full year course next school year. This morning Howe Public Schools’ officials were made aware of a situation south of our community where law enforcement officers were in pursuit if an individual. Our Howe Public Schools’ Resource Officer was notified by law enforcement, and our staff was informed to maintain normal protocol of locked doors and to closely monitor our students as they arrived on our campus and began their morning routines. At no time was there a threat to our campus and at no time did Administration call for a lockdown. There was limited confusion, but be assured there is no threat or immediate danger to our campus. The situation is being monitored closely, and school officials are in direct communication with law enforcement as they seek to apprehend the individual. Please note: The KFSM Channel 5 News misinformed the public when they quoted Mr. Dyer in reference to a lockdown. That communication is being cleared up. As additional information becomes available or if the situation changes, parents will be notified.
