Good Luck to our Howe Lady Lions and Lions in the 89th Annual LeFlore County High School Basketball Tournament. See info below regarding Tournament Guidelines. Brackets are attached.
The LeFlore County Basketball Tournament is one of the longest running high school basketball tournaments in the State of Oklahoma, as it dates back to 1932. Generations of LeFlore County athletes have participated in this traditional tournament that includes all thirteen high schools in LeFlore County. This currently includes schools as small as Class B to those as large as Class 4A, which often makes for interesting match-ups and unlikely rivalries. Each year, the high schools of LeFlore County rotate hosting privileges and responsibilities. The 2021 LeFlore County Tournament is the 89th annual event and is coordinated by Whitesboro Public Schools with assistance from the other 12 High Schools in the County! Here's this week's brackets and game guidelines:
High School County Tournament Guidelines
SITES
✅ Top seed will be the host of the venue or will be responsible for finding a venue. This is regardless of win or loses in the tournament. Live stream required for all hosting venues.
✅ No Hospitality
✅ Disinfecting of the facility including locker rooms, bathrooms, and stands is the host’s responsibility.
PPE
✅ Mask to enter, and move
✅ Temperature checks at the door.
✅ Social Distancing required
✅ Host sites with a stronger or weaker policy on PPE will need to adopt a temporary policy to match the tournaments or lose their ability to host.
ENTRANCE TO THE FACILITY
✅ 100 tickets/slots per team per game for spectators.
✅ In the event that a venue cannot support 200 tickets/slots, each team will receive one-half of the venue’s half capacity.
The 100 tickets/slots are based upon 15 team members, 10 cheerleaders each receiving 4 tickets/slots each. It is up to the local district to distribute the tickets as they see fit. There is the assumption that no player/cheerleader would receive less than two.
✅ Tickets/List does not pay for entry. It only allows entry.
All ticket/slot holders must clear venue after every game and must pay to reenter.
✅ Since the venue will be cleared after each game, the gate for all ticket/slot holders (regardless of age) will be lowered to $3.00.
100 tickets/slots do not include administrators, boards, school official, game officials, score keepers, or others necessary for the executing of the games. A list of these attendees will be required from all schools.
✅ ID will be required at the gate for entry and checked against the supplied Google Sheets lists, and/or Team Roster.
Coach/Player Roster and a master Google Sheet list of administrators, board members, and ticket/slot holders will be created at the beginning of the week. Changes to the list must be made prior to 3:00 pm on game day and distributed to the host districts.
✅ Teams/Coaches/Mangers/Scorekeepers/et.al. must enter as a team to speed up the entry process.
✅ There is no limit on the number of players/cheerleaders who can suit up (within reason). Additional players will not add to the 100 tickets/slots the local district receives.
TOURNAMENT PLAY
✅ Quarantined teams will be a medical forfeit.
Notification of quarantine event will be the responsibility of the affected team.
Player lists will be required.
Each game is a single event.
✅ KTC and or the coordinating school will distribute trophies to site
Individual player awards will be streamed, and trophies distributed to the players school for them to pick up.

November 13, 2020
Dear Parents,
Due to an increase in COVID cases and an increase in quarantines and absences within our school, Howe Public Schools will transition to distance learning for the week of Nov 16-19 (Monday-Thursday). Just a reminder, Friday, Nov 20 is a scheduled NO SCHOOL DAY (professional development for staff). At this time, school is scheduled to resume after Thanksgiving Break, on Monday Nov 30. Thursday’s P/T Conference scheduled for Nov 19 from 5-8 pm has been postponed. Additionally, all out-of-school activities (including all athletic events) have been postponed.
Next week will differ from the Distance Learning we experienced this past spring. All students will continue to use our learning management systems (LMS) to access their daily assignments, which includes SeeSaw for grades PK-3rd and Google Classroom for grades 4th-12th. All assignments should be completed on time as requested by each individual teacher.
Ongoing communication with teachers is key to provide our students a successful learning experience while in distributed learning. Students should check their email and classroom LMS daily and often. Please communicate any needs that you or your student(s) might have in a timely manner during the regularly scheduled school day times.
Student medications that are held in your school nurse’s office can be picked up at each site by the parent or guardian if needed during this temporary shift to Distributed Learning. Please call the Elementary Office at 918.658.3508 to schedule a time.
The continued safety and well being of students and employees is our top priority. We continue to adhere to guidance from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, State Department of Education, the CDC, and Emergency Management in all decisions made.
Thank you for your understanding and partnership with us as we take the necessary steps to protect our school community. Again, the situation is being closely monitored and we will keep you apprised of any changes.
Sincerely,
Scott L. Parks, Superintendent
Howe Public Schools

Dear Howe Basketball Fans,
I regret to inform you that due to a significant increase of Covid-19 related quarantines that have a direct relationship to activities, Howe Schools will temporarily restrict access to Home Ballgames through Thanksgiving Break. This is being done in an effort to prevent school closure and support our students in being able to participate in the limited games that will take place over the next eight days. We are planning on streaming the games that are affected by this decision and should have streaming links up this afternoon. We appreciate your support with this tough decision, but the welfare of our students and faculty and our ability to keep school operations going remain our priority.
Feel free to contact me or your school administrator if you have any questions regarding this temporary suspension of fan participation.
Sincerely,
Scott Parks,
Superintendent

Many community-based organizations lack the capacity or resources to meet the needs of the growing population of hungry Americans. Food pantries and other charitable organizations also often run short on food that is age appropriate (e.g., low sodium for seniors), culturally appropriate and/or fresh. Tight economic times have only further
burdened these organizations.
This year the Varsity Cheerleaders will partner with NHS to help close the gap on hunger in this area. We would challenge Howe Schools to collect as many cans as possible November 9th through the 20th. This drive challenges our student body to give back to those in need in our community. All items collected will be donated to local food banks in this area.
THE CLASSES WHO COLLECT THE MOST CANS WILL WIN POPSICLES! THEY NEED A MINIMUM OF 20 CANS TO QUALIFY. WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT CANS THAT ARE NOT DENTED, HAVE LABELS, AND HAVE NOT EXPIRED.

Update on Wright City HS game (11/6 6 pm at Wright City) tickets: Each player will be given two tickets for Friday's ballgames; any unused tickets will be provided to our cheerleaders. Tickets must be presented upon entry to game. This ticketing process is isolated to Wright City's game only. #HPSLions

She has hit the ground running and has implemented several new programs that benefit our students and staff focusing on Social Emotional Learning and Wellness. We will feature student specific programs soon, but we wanted to share her Staff Wellness initiative featuring Wellness Wednesdays. On Wednesday of each week, Mrs. Cox sends out an email to staff with a theme that focuses on wellness, self-care, and community. The themes promote important ways to practice wellness, and hopefully provide some inspiration and motivation for our hard-working staff.
Along with the themed inspirational emails, mindfulness activities are included to allow staff to participate and engage. Staff who choose to respond/participate are entered into a prize drawing at the end of the month. Congratulations to September's winner, 1st Grade teacher Mrs. Kayla Sanford! Dear Parent/Guardian:
The single best way to help prevent the spread of the flu, is flu vaccination. As part of a continued collaboration between the Health Department and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, a school flu vaccination program is available this year which will provide voluntary flu vaccinations at no charge to school staff and students (native and non-native). This program would not be possible without the support of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
Our local Health Department/Choctaw Nation Nurses will be at Howe Public Schools on Thursday, October 22, 2020. Linked below you will find a consent form that must be completed and returned before Thursday , Oct 22, in order for your child to receive a flu vaccine. We will be unable to immunize anyone under 18 years old without a completed consent form. Only injectable flu vaccine will be provided (nasal mist will not be available). If students are not cooperative, the vaccine will not be administered. Parents/guardians are welcome to be in attendance.
If you have any questions, please contact the LeFlore County Health Department at 918-647-8601 or Lori Hall, RN at Howe Public Schools at 918-658-3508.

From: Howe High School
This letter is to communicate with the parents of Howe High Schools’ Junior Class for the 2020-21 school year.
Our school district plans to administer the ACT test in spring 2021 to eligible juniors as a part of the state contract with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and ACT.

Additional information on why we chose the ACT can be found by going to the following website: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/scores/act-vs-sat.html
If you have any questions or concerns, I may be reached at 918-658-3368 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Please send questions/comments by November 9, 2020.

One of the many precautionary measures we are putting in place this school year to ensure the safety of our students and staff is the installation of plexiglass dividers and sneeze guards. Due to high cost and low availability of similar product, the maintenance and custodial staff have been hard at work fabricating dividers to place in various high-risk areas including the cafeteria and classrooms where directional seating is not an option. The staff created these items utilizing 4 X 8 sheets of raw stock plexiglass purchased at Ron’s Discount Lumber. The staff worked on a cost effective design using a table saw, hand sanding and sealants.
We would like to give a BIG LION ROAR to several of our maintenance and custodial staff for a job well done! Big thank you to David Wright, Sean Covey, Natasha Hale, and Samantha Bebe for all your hard work in creating these and placing them throughout our campus. #HPSLions #LionStrong #WeAreAllInThisTogether #OklaEd

Attn Howe Families: OKSDE has “partnered with Oklahoma Human Services to provide extra food benefits for families due to COVID-19. Under this new plan, current households receiving SNAP benefits *AND* non-SNAP households that include children eligible for free and reduced-priced meals, will automatically receive benefits without needing to complete an application.
Benefits will be issued for the 44-day period that schools were closed at the end of the 2019-20 school year and are equivalent to the daily reimbursement for free breakfast and lunch. Benefits will be automatically issued in staggered allotments by August 30. Families already receiving SNAP will receive the benefits on their cards. Non-SNAP families will be issued cards, which they will receive in the mail along with instructions on pinning the card, how to decline the benefit or return the card.
“We appreciate this partnership to reach children and families who are economically impacted most because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Children must have their basic needs met to be ready to learn, and many Oklahoma families rely on free or reduced-priced school meals when schools are open. We’re grateful that OKDHS is a strong ally in making sure our children have every opportunity for high-quality nutrition during this unprecedented time.” - State Supt. Joy Hofmeister”

Attention Howe Seniors: Southeastern offers new $1,500 tuition waiver for all first-time freshmen from Oklahoma
By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University is always looking for new opportunities to make higher education more affordable to students.
The University recently announced the establishment of the “Stronger Storm Scholarship’’ that will provide a $1,500 tuition waiver beginning this fall to all first-time, full-time (12 hours) freshmen who are Oklahoma residents.

The one-year tuition waiver ($750 per semester) will apply to freshmen who have already enrolled at Southeastern, as well as to other eligible students who are admitted and enrolled by August 7, 2020.
“As a University, we have a responsibility to do our very best to ensure we offer students a quality and affordable education,’’ said Southeastern president Thomas Newsom. “We are able to provide this new tuition waiver due to the revenue generated by our sustained enrollment growth over the past three years. At Southeastern, 85 percent of our students receive some type of financial aid, and each year, about 50 percent of our graduates are first-generation college graduates. We are always looking at innovative ways to assist students and families as they pursue their higher education goals.’’
Last fall, Southeastern’s enrollment reached an all-time high of 4,824 students. In addition, the Spring 2020 enrollment of 4,744 students was the largest spring enrollment recorded in the 111-year history of the University. This summer’s enrollment also set a record high for the school.
For questions about admissions and enrollment, call 580-745-2060 or visit www.SE.edu.

Since 2009, our school has been offering an incentive to help improve students' ACT scores. Thanks to the generous donations from Mr. Jason Blake, we have been able to award over $10,000 over the past decade. It works like this: if students score 20 or better on their ACT, they will receive $100. Once students score 20 or better, if they improve their composite score by 2 points or more, they will receive another $100. If students score a 30 or better they will receive $300. This is for the national test only. In 2009 we had 6 award winners. This year we have 19 who qualified. CONGRATULATIONS! #HPSLions

Great memory (3/9/2014) from Howe Alumni & former Howe Lion basketball player, Colton Williams’ Mom Stacey: “Howe High School was established in 1907, and a hundred years later the 2007 High School Basketball team made their first trip to State Playoffs! I remember this so well....emotions were running everywhere, and I know it was the best thing that ever happened in these boys’ lives! They made it to the semi-finals, but unfortunately, they came up short! I know they wouldn't have traded that experience for anything, and I was so proud of them for giving it their all! I would like to congratulate the 2013 Howe Lions for advancing to State playoffs......and bring home that Gold Ball!!! 🏀🏆” - Stacey Harrison
And now, forward to 2020, and the Lions are headed back to STATE for the 3rd time in our school’s history! You know what they say, “3rd time is the charm!” #UnfinishedBusiness #GoHowe #LionNation
