From Storytime to Code: The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt
Mrs. Parks' HS Computer Science students blended creativity, art, and coding today for a little Halloween fun!
They began with a classroom read-aloud of The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason — a sweet story about a ghost made of quilt squares instead of a sheet. Inspired by the book, students designed their own “quilt ghosts” two ways:
Art project: Using coffee filters, markers, and water to create colorful
quilt-patterned art ghosts, and
coding digital quilt ghosts from scratch in Code.org’s Game Lab using the skills they've learned so far in Code.org's: Interactive Animations and Games unit.
Each student’s ghost reflected their unique creativity — floating and showing off one-of-a-kind quilt patterns.
Enjoy this example ghost coded by Mrs. Parks in Game Lab:

It was the perfect mix of storytelling, art, and computer science — a hauntingly fun day of learning and creativity!

Safety Update from Howe Public Schools
Late last night, law enforcement and school officials concluded an investigation into a message resembling a threat that was discovered inside the gym after 3rd-6th Grade Girls basketball games had ended.
Our LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Barry Riggs, Coach Chris Brown, and Superintendent Scott Parks immediately reviewed video surveillance and followed up with students from a visiting school. Officers visited the homes of the students involved and confirmed what was written and who was responsible. The individuals were determined to be elementary students from the visiting school, who admitted to writing the message. It was confirmed to be a hoax.
There is no credible threat to Howe students, staff, or facilities. The area was secured, all evidence preserved, and the visiting school’s administration is addressing the matter in coordination with law enforcement.
We appreciate the quick and thorough response from Officer Riggs, Superintendent Parks, and Coach Chris Brown, who assisted in reviewing video footage and supporting the investigation. We also want to commend one of our Howe High School students who acted responsibly by reporting the potential threat, which allowed officials to respond swiftly and appropriately.
Additionally, we extend our sincere thanks to the students and staff from the visiting school for their cooperation and assistance in identifying those involved and helping bring the matter to a quick resolution.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to maintain a safe and positive environment for all students and families at Howe Public Schools.
Remember: If you see something, say something.

More Than Just a Coach
Mrs. Gardenhire’s 2nd grade class had a sweet surprise for one of their favorite staff members — Coach Scarberry (or as they like to call him, Coach “Strawberry” 🍓)!
These students have built such a special bond with him — they were so proud when he was named Coach of the Year ! They even made him cards and hid so they could jump out and congratulate him!
Earlier this month, when Coach Scarberry was returning Mrs. Gardenhire’s class from PE (Skills), the students asked him to read to them — and without hesitation, he picked up Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins and made their day.
More than just a coach, he’s a role model, mentor, and friend who makes learning fun both on and off the field.
